Christmas Sales Soar Online
Article last updated on 11 January 2011
A number of UK online shops have announced incredible Christmas trade. In particular, Boxing Day is reported as being the busiest day in 2010 for selling online with the number of visits to websites 12% higher than in November, according to Experian Hitwise.
Clothing retailer Next enjoyed a significant rise in online sales, which has pushed catalogue sales up by 8.7% year-on-year and helped the UK business to reach its profit targets despite high street sales being weakened by the recent snowfalls. In particular the chain’s website enjoyed a sharp increase in business on Christmas Day thanks to an early seasonal sale.
John Lewis has also reported an increase in online trading over the festive period, as in the five weeks run up to the New Year, the John Lewis website sales were 42% up on last year.
Andy Street, Managing Director of John Lewis, said “Sales during both Christmas and Clearance have been outstanding. We have broken records for the biggest week (£121m) and biggest day (£27.8m) as well as hitting a key milestone (£500m for the year) for our online trade.”
